Solid Surfaces - Your Questions Answered

Below are some answers to a few common questions we are asked.

Why Solid Surface above other materials such as Marble, Granite, Slate and Wood?

Unlike the other materials mentioned, Solid Surface is a man made stone, produced from natural materials. It has a composition which makes it impervious to water, germs and stain resistant, meaning the minimum of maintenance. Additionally, it can be curved and manipulated into sizes and shapes of choice, ensuring that you will gain a completely hand crafted, bespoke item.

It can be joined together with virually inconspicuous seams, providing the illusion of counter tops that are all one piece, no matter what the size. Most tops are between 30 and 40mm thick, but we can provide you with a thicker top, or thinner (dependant on the application).

As well as this, there are a range of Solid Surface sinks made to complement any design, which will enable the discerning to obtain an area where the sink and counter top are all in together, ensuring optimum cleanliness and hygiene, with minimal maintenance.

Are all colours suitable?

The simple answer is that Solid Surfaces are extremely durable and can be relied upon to maintain their appearance when used frequently, however, some colours can show visible damage more than others, in particular the blacks and darker colours.

These look marvellous when finished, but in the event of scratching, the scratch will appear white due to the pigmentation of the material.

It is therefore recommended that the darker, denser colours be avoided in areas such as the kitchen where they will be subjected to more use and if they are selected, then a disclaimer against accidental damage would need to be signed prior to fabrication.

Please view our full dark colour disclaimer warning document for more information.

Can it Stain?

The simple answer is that Solid Surfaces are very easy to keep clean and looking as good as new with just a little bit of tlc. Solid Surfaces are not self cleaning, but can be kept pristine with very little effort. For every day cleaning use an ordinary household cleaner. If you have stubborn stains you can use Bar Keepers Friend. Any clothes washing liquid will also help to keep your surfaces looking immaculate.

The sheets are consistent throughout, ensuring that delamination and water damage cannot occur. It also means that should you find your surfaces becoming tired looking, they can polished back to their former glory.

Will heat damage it?

Care should be taken, as would be with marble or granite. We, therefore, recommend the use of stainless steel hot bars to ensure that your tops do not become damaged by excessive heat. Treat with care and your tops, an investment in your home, will last a long time!
